Nach der Serienfertigung vom Bus T1 kam 1967 die zweite Generation Bus T2 auf dem Markt. Ab 1972 verbaute Volkswagen die stärkeren Motoren oder auch ein Automatikgetriebe mit drei Gängen in die Autos ein. Das Einstiegsmodell 1600 hatte ein 1,6 Liter Hubraum mit 47 PS oder 50 PS, und kam auf eine Höchstgeschwindigkeit von gut 100 km/h oder 110 km/h. Das Modell 1700/1800 das ab 1970 in den Verkauf ging hatte einen Hubraum von 1,7 oder 1,8 Liter, mit entweder 66 oder 68 PS kam er auf eine Höchstgeschwindigkeit von 125 km/h. Das Topmodell das ab 1975 erhältlich war, hatte einen Hubraum von 2,0 Liter mit 68 oder 70 PS, kam auf eine Höchstgeschwindigkeit von 130 km/h. Bis zum 31 Oktober 1979 verließen 2,5 Millionen T2 Busse das Band.
