In dieser Zeit wurden insgesamt 1,8 Millionen T1 Busse in verschiedenen Ausführungen verkauft. Der Bus T1 hat den Motor vom Käfer und Teile des Fahrwerks vom Kübelwagen. Woher kommt der Name „Bulli“ eigentlich? Leider lässt sich die Herkunft des Spitznamens heute nicht mehr nachzuvollziehen, eine plausible Variante ist die Mischung von Bus und Lieferwagen, die zusammen „Bulli“ ergibt.
